Restoration begins on Olmstead murals in Science building lobby
City Currents - December 10-6, 2001
Restoration work on "Theory and Science," the murals created by Frederick E. Olmstead flanking the entrance to the Science Building shortly after it was build on the Phelan/Ocean Avenue Campus, has begun. Grime build up over decades is being cleansed in preparation for filling-in gouges resulting from graffiti and then repainting the areas to blend seamlessly with the original work. Lourdan Kimbrell (second from left), former CCSF student, was the original proponent of the restoration project. Doing the actual work are City College students under the direction of mural restorer Nathan Zakheim (second from right). Also pictured are project boosters (left to right) Vive Chancellor Peter Goldstein, Kimbrell, Works of Art Committee members Julia Bergman and Will Maynez, Zakheim and his son, Kuvaleshaya Zakheim. Volunteers are welcome, just stop by the murals and you will be put to work. The restoration is expected to take three to four weeks. The funding is provided by Prop A Funds - Science Building, Partnership for Excellence and Associated Students
